Filmmaker to announce Louisiana Film Prize
“Haynesville” filmmaker Gregory Kallenberg will announces largest film contest of its kind at Jan. 26 event
SHREVEPORT, LA – One lucky filmmaker could receive the largest prize of its kind when a new short film contest launches in Shreveport on Jan. 26. “Haynesville” filmmaker Gregory Kallenberg will announce his new contest, the La. Film Prize Contest and Film Festival, at a press conference, 5 p.m., Jan. 26 at the Robinson Film Center. The press conference will be followed by a celebration during “The Last Martini,” a film industry networking event, held 6 to 8 p.m. at Robinson Film Center.
The La. Film Prize Contest and Festival invites filmmakers from all over the world to create and present a short film under one condition – it must be shot in Shreveport-Bossier. The winner will receive a grand prize of $50,000.
Filmmakers will have five months, from February 1 to July 9, to produce their film. Each filmmaker will be provided with an ambassador and a team of volunteers, resources and aids to help them with production, housing, promotional events and other needs during their stay.
The top 20 films will be selected to promote and screen their film during the La. Film Prize Festival weekend, Oct. 12-14. The winner will be chosen based on the votes of a panel of expert judges from all over the country, as well as the vote of the filmmaker’s audience. Finalists are encouraged to heavily promote their project and enlist turnout support from friends, family and the public to heighten their chances of winning.
Organizers hope the La. Film Prize will further grow and transform Shreveport-Bossier’s creative community, alongside the existing efforts of organizations like Moonbot Studios, Gorilla Design Studio, CoHabitat, Robinson Film Center and artspace.
“Ever since I returned to my hometown, I’ve wanted to find a way to help spur the ongoing evolution of our town into a creative mecca and give our city a national brand as a home to the creative class,” Kallenberg said. “As SXSW transformed Austin, the La. Film Prize will do the same for our region.”

NOTICE - SHREVEPORT, LA
A Shreveport film and animation studio is celebrating an Oscar nomination for it's first released animation project. Moonbot Studios animated short film, "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore," directed by William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg, is one of five animated short films that will be considered for outstanding film achievements of 2011 in the 84th Academy Awards,® which take place on February 26, 2012.
The newly opened Moonbot Studios is based in Shreveport, Louisiana and The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore is the company's first released animation project.
The film's plot summary explains that it is "inspired, in equal measures, by Hurricane Katrina, Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz, and a love for books, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore is a poignant, humorous allegory about the curative powers of story. Using a variety of techniques (miniatures, computer animation, 2D animation) award winning author/ illustrator William Joyce and Co-director Brandon Oldenburg present a hybrid style of animation that harkens back to silent films and MGM Technicolor musicals. Morris Lessmore is old fashioned and cutting edge at the same time."
Their iPad app based on the short film was named "App of the Year" by Apps Magazine, a UK based technology magazine.

Press Release - Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle
Louisiana made cinematic history in 1918. The silent motion picture “Tarzan of the Apes” was shot in Morgan City, LA. It was the first feature-length, major motion picture made on location in the U. S. It became one of the top six movies of the silent era and was one of the first to earn over one million dollars at the box office. Its success opened the door for some 80 movie sequels; seven television shows and became the first character to be merchandised internationally.
These are just a few of the amazing facts and legends covered in a new documentary entitled “Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle.” Al Bohl of Bossier City and his daughter Allison of Lafayette have worked for four years filming locations and interviewing actors, scholars, authors, collectors, fans and the family of Edgar Rice Burroughs. The documentary investigates the belief that monkeys and apes still live in the jungles of the Atchafalaya River basin who are descendants of primates left behind after shooting the film. It also discusses the killing of a lion on film, the German spy who worked on the crew, the use of African Americans as natives and why of all places Louisiana was chosen to make this film.
Al and Allison have also re-edited the original silent film “Tarzan of the Apes.” Kermit Poling has written an all new orchestral score that breathes new life into the old movie. The documentary and original film will be released in January 2012.
Tarzan of the Apes turns 100 years old in 2012. Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. is planning an international celebration for the character. While four new Tarzan films are in various stages of production, only this documentary will be released for the centennial. Beginning on April 12, 2012, a year-long exhibition on “Tarzan of the Apes” will open at the Louisiana State Museum in Patterson, LA. The first festival honoring Tarzan in the character’s history will be on April 13 and 14 in Morgan City, LA.
Al Bohl is the art director for Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center. Mr. Bohl has written and illustrated numerous books. His textbook “Guide to Cartooning” is used in schools around the country. He won best new television show idea at the 2008 international animation festival in Ottawa, Canada. This led to a development deal with 9 Story Entertainment to produce and distribute his half hour animated tv show “Way Out There!”
Allison Bohl is a rising star as a cinematographer and filmmaker. She has won several awards for her documentaries and music videos. She was chosen as the 2007 filmmaker of the year in Louisiana for her documentary “I Always Do My Collars First.” Her newest documentary “King Crawfish” has been playing regularly on the Biography Channel. She just completed directing a television show pilot entitled “Louisiana Crossroads.”

This is the third film festival award for the Shreveport script and its first international recognition. PRESS RELEASE
Academy Award Winning Actor Louis Gossett Jr. Signs On To Local Film Project

Shreveport filmmakers Tim DeWayne and Joey Kent received yet another big boost this week for their screenplay “One More River To Cross” with the formal announcement that Academy Award winning actor Louis Gossett Jr. (“An Officer And A Gentleman”) has attached himself to the project as both actor and producer. Director Tim DeWayne pitched the outline for the story to Gossett last fall and the veteran actor immediately took an interest. “Lou understood the potential of the film and embraced the issues involved,” recounted DeWayne. “He said ‘Get me a script’, and that’s when I approached Joey with the project.”
Screenwriter Joey Kent and DeWayne had already seen their first script collaboration, “The Olive Branch” win accolades at film festivals when this concept was presented. “All Tim had to say was that Louis Gossett was waiting on a script and I got busy!” said Kent. “Three weeks later, the script was complete and on its way back to Gossett. From outline to script to major talent signing on, all in less than five months, really has been a rocket ride for us. And it’s not over yet!”
“I am excited about this project,” Gossett said from his home in Malibu, California, “and look forward to working with [Director] Tim DeWayne.”
Louis Gossett Jr. will play the male lead of Jesse Harris in “One More River To Cross”, and he has begun circulating the script among a strong list of Hollywood actresses for the coveted lead female role of his wife, Rosetta Harris. The story takes place in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and through a series of flashbacks, ties the injustices suffered during Katrina to the not so distant past in the Civil Rights movement. Visit the website for the movie for more details: www.onemorerivertocross.com .
